Registration is now open for the Knight Center's second MOOC (Massive Open Online Course). The course will formally begin on January 12, 2013 through February 23, 2013. Below are course details and how to register. The introductory area of the course is now available to enrolled students. The introductory area includes access to the course syllabus and the introductory overview video for the course.
1) Go to: http://open.journalismcourses.org 2) Create a new account with a username and password by clicking on “create new account.” 3) Fill out all the required fields. Click on “create my new account.” Then, click on “continue.” 4) You will receive a confirmation email for your newly created account. 5) Click on the link that is sent to your email to confirm the creation of your account. 6) The link sent to your email will send you to the course platform and you will confirm your account by clicking “courses.” 7) You will then be registered in the course platform and will now be able to enroll in available courses. 8) Click on the course title that you want to enroll in. 9) Click “enroll me” to enroll in the course. 10) You are now enrolled in the course! You will also receive a welcome email from the instructor. You can now access the introductory area of the course and access the syllabus. The course will formally begin on January 12, 2013.
How to analyze and critique infographics and visualizations in newspapers, books, TV, etc., and how to propose alternatives that would improve them.
How to plan for data-based storytelling through charts, maps, and diagrams.
How to design infographics and visualizations that are not just attractive but, above all, informative, deep, and accurate.
The rules of graphic design and of interaction design, applied to infographics and visualizations.
Optional: How to use Adobe Illustrator to create infographics.
This course is an introduction to the basics of the visual representation of data. In this class you will learn how to design successful charts and maps, and how to arrange them to compose cohesive storytelling pieces. We will also discuss ethical issues when designing graphics, and how the principles of Graphic Design and of Interaction Design apply to the visualization of information.
The course will have a theoretical component, as we will cover the main rules of the discipline, and also a practical one, as you will learn how to use Adobe Illustrator to design basic infographics and mock ups for interactive visualizations.
You do not need any previous experience in infographics and visualization to take this course. With the readings, video lectures and tutorials available through the course, you will acquire enough skills to start producing compelling simple infographics almost right away.
Optional Certificate: For those that meet all of the criteria and pay a $30 administrative fee, a certificate of completion will be sent via email, in PDF format. No formal course credit of any kind is associated with the certificate. The certificate is awarded by the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas to attest to the participation in the online course.
