This is an essential course if you intend to use R software for any variety of mathematical or scientific modeling. ... More and more large firms and government agencies are transitioning to the use of R because of the extensibility and ever-growing scientific user base that the R community enjoys.

At the heart of this educational summer offering is a live, online, 10-week course on programming and numerical simulation using R software. The first six classes instruct with respect to basic and intermediate programming skills for developing numerical, statistical, simulation, and other scientific functions and applications with R statistical software. The remaining four classes apply these R programming skills and techniques to explore how best to achieve numerical program efficiency and how to effectively accomplish root-finding, numerical integration and optimization using R. ... It is ideal for doctoral students, university faculty, and other quantitative researchers who have unique algorithms and mathematical processes to model and who seek an alternative to the use of costly proprietary statistical analysis software.

Application for Free Workshop on Quasi-Experimental Design and Analysis in Education (01 Jun 2012)

With generous financial support of the Institute of Education Sciences and Northwestern University, Professors Tom Cook of Northwestern University and Will Shadish of University of California, Merced, will be leading a workshop in the summer of 2012 on the design and analysis of practical quasi-experiments for use in education. The workshop date is August 6 - 10, 2012. Further details for the workshops can be found at:

http://www.northwestern.edu/ipr/events/workshops/qeworkshop.html

These workshops are designed to complement the current interest in randomized experiments in education by simultaneously seeking to improve the quality of the quasi-experiments that are needed when random assignment is not feasible or breaks down. Several recent analyses of the quality of quasi-experiments in education point to designs and analyses that are generally below the state of the art, and so the workshop's principal aim is to improve this state.

Each workshop will have attendees from academe and school districts, plus a few employees from contract research firms and the Federal government. Most attendees will already have a Ph.D., but senior graduate students working on quasi-experimental matters are also encouraged to apply. We are particularly looking for people who are doing - or plan to do - a specific quasi-experimental project or who are active in writing about quasi-experimental theory or practice or causal analysis in general. Each workshop will be open to 60 attendees.

Modern Approaches to Missing Data June 4-8, 2012
Instructor: Ofer Harel and Gregory Matthews

Missing data is a common complication in applied research, however, many practitioners are still ignoring this problem. Numerous examples from missing data literature demonstrate that dealing with missing data correctly is very important. Failure to correctly account for missing data creates many potential problems, including biased results, reduced power and inefficient estimates. Multiple Imputation (MI) is a comprehensive method used to handle problems of analyzing incomplete data. This workshop will introduce the vocabulary and main assumptions in the missing data literature followed by the introduction of the main ideas of MI with an emphasis on practical implementation of both fully and semi-parametric procedures. R, an open source (free) statistical software, which has steadily gained in popularity, will be introduced and used as the main statistical software for implementing imputation.

DATIC, founded in 2003 by David A. Kenny, offers professional development summer workshops in a variety of modern data analytic techniques. All workshops are geared toward researchers who wish to utilize these techniques in their own work. The maximum enrollment for all DATIC week-long workshops is 24 students, which allows for personal contact with the instructors and a great deal of hands-on learning. Although all workshops are introductory, they do assume familiarity with traditional statistical techniques such as multiple regression, as well as familiarity with a general purpose statistical software package, such as SPSS, SAS, R, Stata, etc. This summer, DATIC will offer 5 week-long training institutes on a variety of data analysis topics. The cost of the workshops is $1100 if registration and payment are received prior to March 1st. Online registration for the workshops is now open.
AEA eStudy Webinar: Intermediate Developmental Evaluation: Applying Complexity Concepts to Enhance Innovation and Use (11 Jun 2012)

eStudy 012: Intermediate Developmental Evaluation: Applying Complexity Concepts to Enhance Innovation and Use - Michael Quinn Patton
Dates: Mondays and Wednesdays June 11, 13, 18, & 20, 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM Eastern Time. For one registration fee, participants may attend 1 or all sessions.
Length: 6 total contact hours
Description: This eStudy is geared for an audience with intermediate level expertise in developmental evaluation (DE). DE is especially appropriate for innovative initiatives or organizations in dynamic and complex environments where participants, conditions, interventions, and context are turbulent, pathways for achieving desired outcomes are uncertain, and conflicts about what to do are high. DE supports reality-testing, innovation, and adaptation in complex dynamic systems where relationships among critical elements are nonlinear and emergent. Evaluation use in such environments focuses on continuous and ongoing adaptation, intensive reflective practice, and rapid, real-time feedback. The purpose of DE is to help develop and adapt the intervention (different from improving a model).

This evaluation approach involves partnering relationships between social innovators and evaluators in which the evaluator’s role focuses on helping innovators embed evaluative thinking into their decision-making processes as part of their ongoing design and implementation initiatives. DE can apply to any complex change effort anywhere in the world. Through lecture, discussion, and small-group practice exercises, this workshop will position DE as an important option for evaluation in contrast to formative and summative evaluations as well as other approaches to evaluation.

This eStudy will occur in four 90-minute sessions and will include preparation materials sent before, between, and after the sessions.

Day 1 - Emergent methods in practice: The challenges of designing & budgeting developmental evaluation studies

Day 2 - Co-evolution and interdependence: The challenges of the relationship between the developmental evaluator and social innovators (primary intended evaluation users)

Day 3 - Making “real time” feedback meaningful and valid: The challenges of evaluation in a fast-paced, real-time world
Day 4 - Issues raised by participants: Interactions around DE in theory & practice

Presenter: Michael Quinn Patton is an independent consultant based in Minnesota and former president of the American Evaluation Association. An internationally known expert on Utilization-focused Evaluation, this workshop is based on his book, Developmental Evaluation: Applying Complexity Concepts to Enhance Innovation and Use (Guilford, 2010).
Dyadic Analysis Using SEM June 25-29, 2012
Instructors: David A. Kenny, Randi Garcia, & Tessa V. West

The workshop on dyadic data analysis will focus on data where both members of a dyad are measured on the same set of variables. Among the topics to be covered are the measurement of non-independence, the actor-partner interdependence and common fate models, mediation and moderation of dyadic effects, and growth curve models of dyadic data. Most of the focus is on distinguishable dyads (e.g., husbands and wives). The software package used in the workshop will be Amos, and it is presumed that participants have some familiarity with Structural Equation Modeling (e.g., model specification, chi square difference, and model fit).
